8-10 October witnessed the whole RGS school community across the globe coming together for our inaugural virtual journey across the world: a challenge of truly global proportions. Students, staff and families at all of our schools were encouraged to complete whatever distance they could throughout the weekend; the only stipulation being that the method of transport had to be non-motorised!
The event got off to a flying start in Guildford at 7.00am Friday at the front of school with students and staff rowing and cycling the equivalent of Guildford to Belgium during the school day, whilst RGS Prep ran laps of the playing fields. in their House colours. Meanwhile in Dubai, Qatar and Nanjing the RGS community embraced the challenge with distances covered in the pool, on SUP boards, on scooters and on camels!
The entries became increasingly original, innovative and entertaining as the weekend progressed. By mid-way through the weekend we had travelled just short of 3,000km, and it was fantastic to witness the whole School community getting involved as the distance covered increased.
In total, the RGS family of schools managed to travel a total of non-motorised 8,150km: the equivalent of travelling from Guildford to Qatar, onto Dubai and part way to Nanjing. The genuine camaraderie and collaboration enjoyed throughout this event was evident. Already there are calls from all our schools to repeat the event in a bid to challenge ourselves to go further next time!
Race Across the World also provided a great opportunity for the Guildford school to raise over £3,600 for our nominated charities. An amazing £1,700 was raised for the Max Windle Memorial Trust, Alzheimers Society and Compassion whilst the Prep school raised over £1,900 for their nominated charities.
